Geneva Laur
Is an artist and creative based in Wilmington, DE.
Her personal work predominantly investigates the psychological and emotional aspects of eating disorders by visualizing the internal experiences brought about by them. In her paintings and drawings, the human body becomes an object to manipulate and insert into different scenarios as a way of giving physicality to the abstract feelings of a sick mind. The thematic exploration of her work involves the internal and external, creating images that relate the opposing states to each other and suggest a cycle between them. These themes are drawn from the bodily processes of consumption and expulsion that heavily characterize bulimia nervosa. As such, much of her work positions eating alongside ways of removing contents from the body, such as regurgitation, vomiting, or dismemberment.
She also explores the different conditions of society and humanity in her work, particularly in areas where identities overlap with gender. Aligning her approach to representing eating disorders, this work often assumes horror, grotesque, or quirky aesthetics, allowing the artist to confront viewers with the realities of certain topics to a broader audience. Anxiety, control, desperation, and perfectionism are a few of the concepts highlighted in her work, expressed through dark or uncanny imagery and figural expression.
